STANTON SPEEDWAY

Years of operation:  1923 and 1924

Location:  near Glen Ellyn , Ill.  (directions said to go west on either Ogden Ave. or Roosevelt Road and follow the signs)

Notes:  Perhaps one of the most obscure and long-forgotten Chicago area race tracks is the Stanton Speedway, which was located near Glen Ellyn .  The half-mile dirt track, also referred to as the Tom Stanton Speedway, apparently operated in 1923 and 1924 and might have been some type of horse stable track.  In 1923, the final race program of the season was scheduled for the Stanton oval with the likes of early Chicago area racing stars Cliff Woodbury, Paul Clancy, George Beck, Curley Young and Esthan Wenneston among the entries.  Several events were held in 1924 with open-wheel great Gus Schrader driving a Dodge to victory in a 15-mile race over Arthur “Fuzzy” Davidson, S. Erickson and H.H. Lewis on 6/29/24.
